Chlamydia pneumonia (and other infective agents) in atherosclerosis and acute coronary syndromes. How good is the evidence?

چکیده
It is acknowledged that local and systemic inflammatory processes play an important role in the development and progression of atherosclerotic lesions, and in the pathophysiology of acute coronary syndromes. Established cardiovascular risk factors do not completely explain the epidemiological changes of, and the diverse presentations of, coronary heart disease. This had led to increasing interest in the contribution of certain infectious agents as atherogenic risk factors. The evidence for Chlamydia pneumoniae as a potential causative agent is strong, and is largely based on the findings of (1) seroepidemiological studies, (2) examination of atheromatous plaque specimens, (3) in-vitro experiments and animal models and recently, (4) preliminary antichlamydial antiobiotic intervention studies. This review aims to focus on the scientific evidence of the implication of C. pneumoniae (and other infective agents) as a culprit aetiological agent in atherogenesis and coronary heart disease.

Abstract Background and objectives: Coronary Artery Disease is one of the most important causes of death in the world. Atherosclerosis is a complex disorder and many factors cause it . Background: Today, coronary artery disease is a leading cause of death and morbidity in the world and recognition of all aspects of this problem appears to be necessary and important. In recent years in addition to traditional coronary risk factors, other new risk factors are presented that can affect coronary arteries and accelerate atherosclerosis process. One of the most important of these,...

Chlamydia pneumonia is a common cause of lower respiratory tract infection and causes about 10-20% of community acquired pneumonia. It is seen in any age group and reactivates the asthma, so it needs specific treatment. Chlamydia pneumonia hardly grows in culture therefore, serologic diagnosis is used. The goal of the present study was to determine the frequency of acute and previou...
متن کاملThe relation between Chlamydia pneumoniae and atherosclerosis.
A causative role of infection in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis was first proposed in 1908 by Sir William Osler.' Although originally this view was not widely accepted, there is now renewed interest in the contributions made by common chronic infections to the pathogenesis and progression of coronary artery disease (CAD). The modemr "response to injury" model of atherosclerosis acknowledge...
